Diego
Fucking Dagger.
He just had to go all wolfy and show the humans what we really were. All to prove a point. To show I wasnât a welcomed sight in town. To make me leave. Jokes on him though. I wasnât leaving. I would never leave. Not without Emma, and not without her knowing what I was. Dagger could shove his power-driven ego where the sun didnât shine.
He also took my choice away. Because, at the end of the day, I had no choice. Rarely, when faced with such a challenge, no shifter did. Shifting became a survival instinct. Shift or die. I chose to live. Thankfully, Emma didnât realize the panther fighting the wolf in the middle of town was me. I wanted to keep it that wayâbecause the less she knew the betterâbut even I understood it was only a matter of time before I was once again left with no choice. Until then, I needed to be extra cautious.
With the number Dagger had done on me, and given the slim chance humans didnât show up to watch the show happening in the middle of town, he probably would have killed me. All to make an example to all the other shifters in town he was law. As far as my little lesson was concerned, my shoulders ached like something fierce, and the blood loss started to make me a little lightheaded. If I didnât make it back to my cabin soon, I would be in a world of hurt.
While I slowly made my way back to my cabin, I was forced to stop often to rest. Once I was home, I started to lick my wounds. Quite literally. All the while I was aware of the fact it would take a while before I was completely healed. My focus was on stopping the bleeding. I had lost enough of it during the fight and on the trip home. The fact remained, if I lost anymore, there would be no healing to speak of.
Shifters healed rather well. One of the blessings of being a shifter. We healed fast too. The caveat to that was being wounded by another shifter. Healing then tended to take a bit longer. Considering Daggerâs power was so much stronger than mine, healing would take much longer than normal. Much longer than I wanted to think about.
Daggerâs power was unhinged. Uncontrolled. His power was different than that of other shifters. And that little nugget of fact was problematic. Toss in a little power hunger and a dash of crazy, Dagger was a walking disaster. The poster child of all that was negative about shifters.
I laid in the late afternoon sun, resting during a break from licking my wounds as I considered the fight could have gone much worse. Never mind Dagger could have killed me and Emma likely would have never known what happened to me. She was there. She saw the whole thing. That was a problem.
My phone rang from within my cabin.
My panther body ached.
